[...] Ditto for Chris Butcher’s Casanova review. Amazing writing, there, tackling a wonderful, mind-blowing series that’s doing something really different. [...]

[...] Christopher Butcher looks at the first issue of Matt Fraction and Gabriel Ba’s sci-fi action series, Casanova. But really, can it compare to Spider-Man slowly killing Mary Jane with his radioactive jism? I don’t think so. Nothing can. [...]

Great piece; I'm really glad to see more long-form writing from you - few in this field does it better. But hold up, Casanova's only a limited series? Say it ain't so! Do you know if it's returning, or if it was meant as a fast in-and-out deal? After this, a life without a steady dose of Fabula Berserko seems unbearable.

Brian- I guess I should expand on that a little. I guess, I dunno, I pick up a first issue of a comic lately and nothing fucking happens. There's no 'there' there, if you catch my meaning. It's all moving the characters into the book and setting the scene for things to end on a cliffhanger before shit goes down. In the first issue of Casanova? I'm trying not to spoil things, but you read the first issue and SHIT HAPPENS. All over the place. Coating every surface. It's a totally different experience than something like... well, that statement needs me to shit-talk another comic book, so I'll skip it, but you must read a bunch of comics, you must see the difference.

I liked this comic, although I disagree with your statement that it's not all set-up. As a first issue, it's meant to acclimate. When the issue ended, I kind of knew what the book was like, but I also knew that this first issue was so much about establishing the world (kind of literally, with the reality jumps) that all subsequent issues would be a lot more fun. It's showing you the rules of the game that starts to be played with issue two.
