Hi Chris!

This is Kiel over at Wizard. There were some folks over at The Beat discussing this, and I thought I’d repost here what I told them about our award nomination process:

I just thought Iâ€™d drop in to note that the majority of the nominees are culled from suggestions from our readers over at the Wizard site. In a few of the categories where we received a smaller field of nominations, the staff at the magazine added in some of our own personal favorites (which is where I believe both the Oni nod and the Roger call out came from, amongst other things). With that in mind, I donâ€™t think it comes as a surprise to anyone that the majority of fansâ€™ nominations fall pretty closely in line with the Marvel and DC product that sells well in the Direct Market.

As for eligibility, anything that came out in 2006 could be nominated (if itâ€™s a miniseries, then the final issue had to ship in â€˜06). We started the nomination process in early February, but donâ€™t do the voting until now because we like to give the awards out at the Wizard Chicago convention. And I know that some of the tangential categories arenâ€™t direct comics tie-ins, but the general view here is that if you went to see V For Vendetta, Superman Returns, Art School Confidential and X-Men 3 in the theater this year, you cared about Casino Royale as well.

Or, you know, Image, or maybe Dark Horse? Those guys got a few nominations in other categories. Maybe your favorite publisher is Oni (not, say, Oni Press, like their name)? I mean sure, not one other nomination for Oni or any of their talent can be found on the ballot, but you can totally vote for them for best publisherâ€¦ I dunno. I dunno WTF. I guess including Oni on the ballot fulfills this month’s requirement of “indy cred.” You know, just in case someone actually notices that they’re a bit biased towards certain publishers…
And for the record, anyone who immortalizes Slave Leia in porcelain gets my vote, regardless of whatever other fanboy crap is nominated.

-I’m drawing a blank. Didn’t Gold Key once publish a James Bond adaptation or something?
