I got some of those wonderfully square plush dolls when I was in Japan... my sister had bought some previously and explained to me that they are actually flavored tofu blocks. They are just... too adorable...

"Chris Butcher: fearlessly striding through the promised land of consumer temptation, so you don't have to."

Or, more likely, because you can't... but really, really wish that you could, and this good samaritan is looking out for you. Thanks for sharing the goodness!

Barutan Seijin is my absolute favorite Ultraman monster, my love of which is equaled only by my love for Kanegon. Super deformed versions of both are absolutely adorable. :D

I love these posts! And I love that you're totally taking photos of everyday things and random crap. It's totally what I would do.

I really want to go to Japan now, but I don't think I'd be able to handle all the chara-goods stores. I think I'd explode.

John>I think the first panel of the next Elmo strip starts something like Grover in a pit and Elmo screaming "It puts the lotion in the basket..." at him.

James>I going insane trying to remember what that Ultra-Monsters name is. He's in, like, every iteration of Ultraman, isn't he?

*rolls eyes* Jeez it's not a "squid monster" Chris; it's Alien Baltan (Barutan Seijin, バルタン星人).
He is to Ultraman as The Master is to Dr. Who or possibly Luthor to Superman.

Seriously though-- these posts are great! Can't wait to see more.

SUCH... AN... AWESOME POST!

I was going to say, why can't US culture be more like Japan's -- until I got to the creepy Evil Woomba Transformer thing.

And as the parent of a toddler, I was completely amused by the Elmo strip (although I couldn't get the "wearing their skins" thought out of my head; thanks, Chris!). I'll bet my daughter would love it!

(And is it too late to ask for some Sgt. Frog swag? Uh, for my daughter?)

More proof that Japan is the future, robots walk the malls freely, and people ride around in Professor X hover chairs.

AAAARGH! TO BE CONTINUED!?! Even Seasame Street comics end in cliffhangers in Japan. The anticipation is killing me!

I've seen those Moe Transformers at the import toystore in the cool Chinese mall in Markham. Did you see the one where she's kissing Ironhide on the cheek? That was weird.

They have the super articulated sexy girl robot action figures in Markham too, but they ain't 20 bucks. O_O Japanese TOYS R' US is AWESOME.

Pretty Cure is stupid popular, it seems?

Those Jack Skelington dolls in the costume section are frightening as all hell. O_O

Keep up the good work.
