This just in:
We have received word of at least one confirmed, completed date as a result of Singles Night.

Sure it was between a heterosexual couple, but we can't have it all, now can we? ;)

I like coming out at the comic shop, to be honest. I'm old and mean, so when someone is making a stupid gay joke or indulging in completely pointless gay panic, it's fun to point out that there's an actual gay person in earshot and watch them backpedal. It's more satisfying than rolling my eyes and seething.

Dustin, while you and I may disagree on using the label "Geek" with pride, I imagine that we won't disagree on the fact that SweetOnGeeks.com is a world-class promoter. One of the smartest things we did with this event to partner with them on it. We went to several geek-centric sites and they were by far the most vocal and proactive.

Chris, I'm fighting the urge to give my "gay-cred" when I ask this, but, have you tried doing a hetero mixer? I'd be interested to know what differences you saw and what reaction you got from the LGBT crowd.

The statement about customers afraid of being out has weight to it. There was definitely some fall out when we received the Eisner not only for our LGBT mixers but for being a gay-owned store.

With the exception of kristian donaldson's art show, all of our mixers were LGBT based including the first two CAPE mixers with Lea Hernandez and Bryan Hitch. However, they were LGBT in name only as drinking should should always be inclusive. :-)

BNW has been involved with singles night, true, but I think they'll find that hosting specific mixer for a specific demographic will be a positive experience for all of their customers.

We're doing the same thing next Friday (Feb. 22nd) at our store, Heroes Aren't Hard To Find in Charlotte, NC. The marketer behind the Sweet On Geeks dating website is largely to blame, as she has been HIGHLY proactive in recruiting locations to host this sort of night. While the whole "geek" mentality of self-identification is somewhat repugnant to me, we've definitely had a good reaction to just the announcement, and hopefully we'll have a bunch of new faces in the store come Friday. Hats off to Atom!'s successful event--his Flickr set looks really great.

[...] I did very much enjoy reading Chris Butcher’s coverage of a recent comic store attempt at a singles date night. I’m thrilled to hear it went well; there are so many pitfalls in such an event to navigate past. Apparently the key to events like this is involving the larger community and bringing new faces into the comic book store to pair off with your shoppers. Of course, I think the fact that Atom! referred to his customers as his friends says a lot about the very genuine community-driven motivation behind the event, but he also figured out the key to getting a whole bunch of potential customers to see all that Brave New World had to offer: Local Bands.
