Why do fashion designers insist on putting the most sickly anorexic, bulimic models on the runway or in photo shoots. This stuff has to stop it is disgusting to look at. I can't believe that anyone would be looking at the clothing in these ads. Why is it, that the hottest thing in fashion right now is to put the skiniest girls you can find in your photo shoots? Why wouldn't you want to appeal to the average person? What is so wrong with an average girl that is 120/130 lbs.? They are the ones who will be buying the clothing after all. These images do not make me feel different about my body or look at myself differently but, what about young girls who are constanly viewing images like this. They look up to models and celebrities and think that they should look like that too. It is soooo wrong and disturbing.

First time I heard of James Jean was in a great interview he did with The Comics Interpreter.

I've read a lot about him since but still nothing as insightful as that long interview. His work continues to evolve into something so amazing it's hard to believe sometimes that it's the work of human hands and a single fertile mind.

I am happy for James Jean, he is super talented and deserves to be so rewarded.
It makes me sad, however, that most James Jean fans will not be able to afford any of this great stuff (I know I never will), and that many of rich people who are snatching it up won't give a crap who illustrated their clothing and bags.

[...] Last year, I posted a report from the Baltimore Comic-Con, where artists James Jean and Paul Pope made some surprising announcements about plunging into the fashion world. After reading this great post on James Jean’s deal with Prada, I decided to share a little more about his work. [...]

Jerry- Cheers :)

Purse Lover- His illustration really is fantastic, I hope this isn't the end of his fashion collaboration.

Faith- I was just thinking the same thing, re: my next trip to NYC. Hehe...

Steve- I actually came across your photos on flickr while researching this, and they're great. I should probably make a point of grabbing one of those catalogs on my next trip, thanks for the heads-up!

The Prada store in SoHo features a giant James Jean mural, which stretches the length of a city block. When I stopped in to look at it, I was able to pick up a catalog for the James Jean purses and shoes. It's not on my book shelf next to the Process Recess books.

Those fashions are just about the prettiest things I've ever seen. Everything I know about fashion has come from Project Runway, and my store of choice is Value Village, but still ... SO PRETTY. I know prettiness when I see it.

Maybe there'll be knockoff bags in Chinatown when I head back for Christmas... Fingers crossed.
