Since Marc's a friend it would have been doubly awkward if he'd answered that it was a work-for-hire contract! And yes, pretty much all of us on the cartooning faculty at SVA emphasize the importance of understanding the business side of comics. Next fall we'll be offering a class for seniors that's all about navigating the world of publishing. That was my SVA class Marc visited and I was happy to have my bubble deflated. I'll be very interested to see where Viz goes with this. As you said, a company with Viz's clout could really change the comics-publishing game in the West. It is exciting to see companies recognize potential problems with their model and try out new things.
