[...] Chris Butcher talks to Viz’s Marc Weidenbaum about the company’s plans to publish original content and reports back on what he’s learned: Now, you have to understand, all the while I’m having this conversation with Marc… I’m feeling pretty good about all of this actually, but this nagging phrase wouldn’t stop repeating itself in the back of my mind: “THE TOKYOPOP DEAL”. I f****** hate The Tokyopop deal, flat out. It’s awful and abusive of young creators, and while I haven’t gotten up and shouted I TOLD YOU SO at anyone two years later, the number of disenfranchised and angry Tokyopop creators has more-or-less done the work for me. I’m not particularly happy about being right of course; it is, at best, a pyrrhic victory. “Marc,” I said. “Who owns it?” I was honestly not anticipating the response. [...]

[...] Store manager and comic freelancer Christopher Butcher talked with Marc Weidenbaum, the editor-in-chief of Viz Media’s manga magazines and the newly appointed “Vice President, Original Publishing,” about the publisher’s original comic plans at New York Comic Con last weekend. Weidenbaum discussed Viz Media’s plan to adapt a modified version of the creator-editor collaboration system used in Japanese manga companies, and emphasized that the creators would own the works. He also emphasized that his company is not soliciting submissions, but instead is looking for completed works with strong narrative storytelling in any genre. [...]

[...] Manga: - ICv2 has released its Anime/Manga Guide, and Naruto remained the top property while anime sales continue to decline (although box sets seem to be doing well). - An absolute must-read: Christopher Butcher goes way in-depth with VIZ’s original content line. - God help us all, the 48-person girl group AKB48 is getting its own manga. - A mysteriously unnamed set of “anime artists” (I can only assume they actually draw manga?) took part in a breast cancer fundraiser.
That was my SVA class Marc visited and I was happy to have my bubble deflated. Since Marc's a friend it would have been doubly awkward if he'd answered that it was a work-for-hire contract!

And yes, pretty much all of us on the cartooning faculty at SVA emphasize the importance of understanding the business side of comics. Next fall we'll be offering a class for seniors that's all about navigating the world of publishing.

Great post, Chris. I'll be very interested to see where Viz goes with this. As you said, a company with Viz's clout could really change the comics-publishing game in the West. It is exciting to see companies recognize potential problems with their model and try out new things. Even Marvel and DC seem to be doing more on this front recently (in addition to feeding the weekly DM beast).

Great post Christopher. Really enjoying reading your writing here, you are a truly unique voice.

It sounds like a crazy time for comics and creators - but having looked at alot of submissions myself I think that Viz's search will be tough unless they are very proactive themselves.
