This is an incredible article. Thank you so much for posting it. Mostly, though, I just wanted to chime in on Diamond's failure to keep comic shops competitive. I'm an avid manga fan, and when a new volume of a favorite series is released, I want to be able to pick it up on the release date. Despite the fact that I get a member discount at B&N, and could get the volumes cheaper there, I honestly would prefer to buy from my local comic shop. Not only do I want to support their business (which does carry a decent amount of manga), but it's actually much more conveniently located for me. Unfortunately, while the local B&N almost *always* has the new volumes on their release date, the comic shop never does, and half the time does not even have it on their list of what's coming in that week. It's sad, and they end up losing my business.

The comic shop I worked at got even more screwed over on the black jack hardcovers. We ordered fairly heavily on it because I love black jack, and several other employees were big tezuka fans. And then the paperback came out before the hardcover. And then they got shorted on the hardcover (like, less than half what was ordered), and the rest didn't come in for several weeks. That was pretty brutal.

Re: Astroboy

I don't know what Dark Horse is planning, but the "official" Astroboy movie-book tie-in will be an original comic produced by IDW, so that's probably where all the promotion dollars will go. *Shakes crotchety old man fist at Hollywood.*
