It’s my understanding that the Moomin Japanese cartoon was produced without the usual niceities of actually getting permission or paying royalties to Tove Jansson.

There’ve been at least four Moomin series in Japan. Summing up: the one from the 60’s was done without Jansson’s consent; the one from the 70’s couldn’t be licensed(?); the adaptations starting in the 90’s are probably legit as at least the first series was licensed overseas.
Now, to show these clips to the roommates…

The first series of Moomin has two distinct production runs, as Tove Jansson quite rightfully flipped her wig over how Masaaki Osumi and TMS had directed the first 26 episodes.
The production was then passed to Mushi Productions and Rintaro for the remaining 49 episodes. Rintaro returned to it for New Moomin and another 52 episodes. I’ve seen one of the Rintaro episodes show up on nicovideo and it looked beautiful.
Then finally there’s the 90s version by Hiroshi Saito that we got on the BBC over in the UK. I believe there’s two series of that version, with the later episodes using more original material due to running out of material to adapt.

What usually happens is, everytime clips of the old series gets posted to youtube, they are taken down quickly for copyright infringement.
The 5 episodes I see up though are great quality and I wonder (without checking yet) if there is a dvd set over there.
