Ryan -- I'd heard that from a Viz employee as well, about No. 5 having truly awful sales. It's a shame, because I'd also love to see more. Clearly we need an animated movie version to get distributed in the US to try and push an all-in-one edition to come over. Or something.

I'd love to see the rest of Matsumoto's No.5 as well.

That said, I remember hearing from a Viz person that it was (at the time in the mid-2000s) literally the worst selling title they had released. Sales in the hundreds of copies, and that's all.

Not sure if it's true, but that could be an important note. Maybe if a JP all-in-one edition every comes out that they could bring over, a la Tekkon Kinkreet?

"similar reasons"?

Oh, you mean abject cowardice and craven fear on the part of the publishers...

Bokurano improves once it gets past the setup in the first three chapters. There is some stuff that might end up edited, for similar reasons to Shadow Star.

If I remember correctly, Shadow Star was indeed slightly edited in Volume 6(?) in the US, but that edits were also made to the Japanese tankobon as well—even Kitoh had decided that he'd gone a little bit too far. Or at least that's what Toren Smith was posting on the old Studio Proteus site back in the day.

That said, Shadow Star was discontinued in the US because it was part of the Super Manga Blast implosion, which killed ALL of the series that ran in it: Shadow Star, Club 9, Seraphic Feather, 3x3 Eyes, What's Michael?, and... um... I think there might have been one more? Shadow Star and Club 9 were the two huge losses for me. I'd buy new editions were they ever to be published. (HINT HINT TO ANY PUBLISHERS READING THIS.)

Anyway, I heart Saturn Apartments so much I want to marry it, even moreso than Children of the Sea which I've been reading online AND bought the first volume of over the weekend.

I do hope your prediction is right that Viz brings out the remaining volumes of No. 5. (Viz released those two volumes, right?) Is there anything preventing them from putting out the others?
