I can recommend "Johnny Cash: I See A Darkness" to any and all. It's been out here in a dutch language edition for about four months now, and it's pretty gorgeous. Kleinst really has a terrific art style (though based on your assessment of the cover, I'm not sure you'll like it, mr.B: that basically is the style in which the book is drawn). It really is a lovely book, and will probably end up in my top ten of the year.

I had about $30 in my personal pre-order budget left, and had it narrowed it down to the following choices:

Stitches
Logicomix
Masterpiece Comics
Red Snow

After looking at the online previews, I ended up ordering all but Red Snow. And I'm pretty sure I will pick up that last one at some point as well.

Online previews win! The budget loses.

"Disney Publishing is still a worldwide concern"
I just want to make certain you do not attribute this "worldwide publishing" to Disney, whom, yes, usually fraudulently claims the credit. All the Disney comic books there have ever been were produced by freelance cartoonists like Carl Barks working for independent publishers like Dell, Gold Key, Gladstone, Gemstone, Egmont (the world's largest comics publisher) and all the other Disney licencees world wide. Disney never even sees the material until it's published. Please do not give Disney an iota of credit for any Disney comic biook stories you have ever read!

When I lived in Japan in the early 1960s, there were still kamishibai storytellers on the streets near the train stations; not in Tokyo itself, but in the surrounding towns. They were around the station nearest to my grandparents' house, and I always wanted to stop and watch, but my grandparents didn't think it was too classy to hang out on the streets to watch the kamishibai. They also wouldn't let me buy the candy the storytellers always sold (long straight canes of sugary fun).

Substituting the original covers drawn by Tardi for reproductions of interior pages is what constitutes a "lovely trade dress" in your book?

I call it an ill conceived botch job. Besides, the books are shrunken down from their original size, as usual.

Am also excited for a What A Wonderful World, too.

Wait a minute . . . Larry Gonick is finally finishing his Cartoon History? How is this not HUGE news? He's only been doing this for, what, thirty years?

I guess it's a sign of just how much good stuff is released that a book of that caliber and significance can be solicited so quietly. Or maybe there are enough people who just forgot he was still doing the thing? I don't know - but this seems like it should be a MUCH bigger deal than it is.

There's a few things there I knew I was waiting for--notably the Campbell collection--but I am almost knocked over with surprise at the Bertrand Russell bio thing. I hadn't heard word one about that before, and it has the potential to be something that's just made for me. I also hope it's good, obviously.

Hey, TWP was one of the first indy comics I got into because you championed it back in the old PreviewsReview days. As I recall, the ending was suitably wistful and good, so I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.

Great to see you doing these again; my to-buy list just grew several inches!

Matthew: It's an odd move, and I did view it with a little suspicion but in the end I couldn't really see any downside. Realistically, it's a marginal title that will benefit from the extra attention of a unique publishing method, and earn a little bit more shelf-space to draw attention to itself. Why not, you know?
