Sheesh... terms like "yaoi" and "Boys' Love" are publishing categories, not labels meant to suggest strictly defined content or levels of gay-friendliness. Hell, there are gay men who find yaoi/BL offensive in general because they're basically fap material for straight girls, just as some lesbians are offended by yuri and "lipstick lesbians" on TV. I think it's great that a lot of readers, myself included, read BL as a way of embracing and exploring gay rights and issues, but, let's face it, that's not what it's fundamentally about.

Techinically, Antique Bakery is not a yaoi, as the term traditionally refers to doujinshi. However, I would say it definitely qualifies as a BL title. It ran in Wings, a mainstream (if nerdy) shojo magazine known for publishing tons of BL-themed manga. Although only two of the leads are gay, the homoeroticism between all the male characters is a big part of the manga's appeal. Yoshinaga pokes fun at this in her own doujinshi, when she has women visit the bakery and speculate lewdly on the guys' relationships.

The manga wouldn't exist if it didn't have hot guys constantly threatening to make out with each other. There's more going on, of course, because Fumi Yoshinaga is a genius, but come on.

I've edited my comment so as not to 'out' you, which I find ridiculous but then I suppose I would, not having a stupid email address myself. If you don't want to be known by your email address for being gay, get another one. Haven't you been closeted long enough to figure that out?

As for prejudging you based on your having a stupid e-mail address and saying, frankly, stupid things, well, that's the internet for you.

I'm really sorry that the world is unfair and you have a shitty relationship with your mom, but that has no baring on this discussion. The grown-ups can read the part where I conceded in my piece that it isn't yaoi, it's the weeaboos that stopped reading after the first paragraph and hit the comment section.

Finally, if you want to be an LGBT person offended by the blanket use of a term, you're welcome to your offense, somewhere else. This isn't that kind of blog.

No, just a personal e-mail address I've had since I was twelve and thought that kind of thing was funny. Thanks a lot for prejudging me based on something so ridiculously petty. >.>
Anyway, I'm aware it's from the same semantic field, as it were. And that it might flag as 'gay interest'. But seriously, a series where no actual gay activity takes place, beyond some exceedingly and intentionally cheesy dancing in the rain, and one character very, very confusedly buying flowers for another? This is not about weaboo definitions. I happened to read your article in the same week that Stonewall published its findings on the positive portrayal of gay characters on the BBC, which is supposedly a progressive organisation. Six minutes in one hundred and sixty-eight hours of programming. And my mother has the gall to complain to me, of all people, that lesbians are ruining popular entertainment by "being on everything".
And hey, thanks for publishing the majority of my rather distinctive e-mail address. Now anybody who DOESN'T know that I'm Pippin4242 (and hence, probably, doesn't know about my sexuality) and happens across this, will have you tell them! Fantastic! :D

As a member of the LGBT community, I'd like to categorically state that I also find the umbrella descrpition offensive. So it has a (relatively) positively portrayed gay character? That makes it a gay book? That's like calling a manga where a character dies off-screen in a car accident guro. [Editor's Note: No, it doesn't, you weeaboo. Also, your email address describes you as unable to deal with reality, and yet you still insist on trying to make points online? Cognitive dissonance or just a jackass?"]

It's a great series. It's also so explicitly non-yaoi (publisher constraints? Personal interest in creating her first entirely non-BL series? The stuff she's created since has been gen) that Fumi Yoshinaga created her own doujin of the series, with semi-canon status. Now THEY are yaoi, yess.

@Johanna -wait till you get your hands on UnderGrand Hotel! It'll change your views on prison, forever. ^_-

~just playing. Please avoid 'that' title at all cost. I truly liked Red Blinds the Foolish by est em. For plot driven GloBL, try Honeydew Syndrome by Autobrig.

Johanna: some other good, non-standard yaoi that's woth checking out if you haven't:
Future Lovers, Saika Kunieda
Red Blinds the Foolish, est em (and her other books)

Many people seem to have really, really liked Dining Bar Akira (Tomoko Yamashita), although I found it a bit unsatisfying. Like several of Netcomics' recent releases, it came from a Japanese publisher that seems to be looking for a crossover audience and has a slightly more guy-friendly outlook.

Can someone just like AB as a great manga series with a terrific story and wonderful characters? That's how I like it.

Oh, and what do you give next to someone who liked AB but doesn't like the "plotless hot sex" yaoi? Flower of Life, I guess.

You may want to note that All My Darling Daughters is coming from Viz, not DMP. It's out later this month.

While I agree with the sentiment that AB isn't 'pur BL' - it was a manga published by a 'BL publisher' in the states, banking of the mangakas strong ties to that genre.

As for gateway - I think that might've backfired a bit. I recall more than a few non-yaoi reading critics reading AB, loving it - then trying other 'yaoi' titles only to be thoroughly disappointed, or upset by the usual plot tropes. They failed to find the same level of story-telling and characterization that existed in AB, because a majority of BL being published around the time of AB was plotless crap. In Japan it wasn't written for BL fans, so it had to be written well and couldn't rely on hot sex and priddy art - this is what distinguished it under the yaoi-umbrella here in the states. :)

I've always considered AB more of a band-aid manga, rather then a gateway. AB is something you give to a fan that stumbles into yaoi looking for an engaging story, and doesn't find it.

Only to those poor, wretched souls who go through their lives looking to be offended by things. To everyone else, there is simply room to disagree.

And incidentally, if this turns into a weeaboo pity-party about labels by people who've failed to comprehend the last couple paragraphs of my post, I'll just start banning comments and commenters. You can have your forums (many of them) to be indignant about the specificities of your hobby, but that isn't here. Do make sure to link my post though, I'd appreciate the traffic.

Calling Antique Bakery BL is like saying that any novel that features gay characters is slash. It's offensive.
