I don’t know if this is ruining the surprise or just making sure you don’t miss it… Eyeshield 21 Vol 19 hits comics shops everywhere tomorrow, and it features a chapter in full colour! Mirroring the Japanese release of the series, this volume features a chapter that ran in full colour in Japanese Shonen Jump, in what looks like a marker/paint combo by series artist Yusuke Murata. It looks great too, crisp and bright and immaculately produced. I kind of want anything I do in colour to show up on matte/uncoated stock I think? Anyway.
While many manga publishers had begun to print the first few introductory pages of a manga in colour on a special insert, it’s very rare indeed to include a full-colour chapter… Other than some of the recent prestige releases like Tekkon Kinkreet, and a very notable sequence at the end of Yotsuba Volume 3, I can’t think of too many other North American manga that have gone to such lengths to preserve the integrity of the original release. Very cool stuff.

Thanks to Derek for the pic.
I bought this issue based SOLELY on the color pages. Yusuke Murata is a great artist, and particularly good with color, so this was a real treat.
Makes me wonder if this was a one-time deal, or VIZ’s new standard… I sort of want them to keep this up, as it looks completely sick, and I’m a little miffed that EVERYONE could have been doing this ALL ALONG. -_- Sigh.
Eyeshield is awesome. I love how the guy pushes and explodes the limits and boundaries of graphic sfx.
This was a pleasant surprise when I got home from the bookstore yeterday. It is really nice to see this level of quality on something that wouldn’t be considered a prestige release.
I have been noticing a lot more color pages sneaking into my manga lately, but they always seem to be the first few pages in the first volume.
Je trouve que ce manga est magnifique , ce sport le football américain est un sport qui compte juste sur : la force , la vitesse , la technique , l’intelligence
Hot stuff! Eyeshield’s always been and always will be my all time favorite manga. Since online scanlators use the volumes for the first maybe 200 chapters, I missed out on seeing a lot of Murata’s amazing color pages– and wow, a whole chapter of his colors available for me to own? Almost UNBELIEVABLE. Next time I head over to B&N, I’m picking myself up one of these. 🙂
